First decide, then buy

Build the kit around the exam task.

Categories A and D share the general section but differ in purpose: A covers motor craft and D sailing craft. A combined exam includes the general and sailing sections, while an additional category exam may be shorter. Confirm your application and exam type before buying material.

Practical selection

Each item has a clear purpose.

Choose materials that let you practise the required skill under exam conditions: chart work, knots or a complete paper session.

For courses, wind, manoeuvres and sketches

Pencil, eraser, ruler and a small triangle are enough for most study sketches. Buy a full coastal navigation kit only if you will later use it for SBF See or SKS.

Before you order

Do BSP A and D require different study materials?

Partly. They share the general theory section, while category D adds sailing questions and practical sailing manoeuvres. Check that a book or question set covers the category you are taking.

Does the authority recommend a particular book?

The current Bodenseekreis preparation page no longer lists individual materials because the range has grown. Check edition and exam scope yourself.
