On board

Marine distress signals on board

How visual signals, beacons and personal equipment fit the cruising area, and where the German FKN becomes relevant.

Safety first

Retailer links: Links marked * lead to external shops. Keelwake currently receives no commission from them. Selection and order are independent of retailers. Requirements from authorities, flag state and skipper always take priority.

Choose by function

Equipment must fit the route and crew.

There is no universal distress kit. Flag state, cruising area, charter contract, crew and rescue chain determine the equipment. Pyrotechnic signals, electronic beacons and personal location devices serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Focused selection

A few categories, each with a clear job.

The images illustrate the type of equipment. Compare approval, compatibility and service status for the actual product before buying.

Visual signal

Pyrotechnic distress signals

For attracting attention when assistance is within range

Parachute rockets, hand flares and smoke signals differ in range and purpose. The route determines selection and quantity; certain categories require specialist knowledge or additional authorisation.

  • Use approved, in-date signals only
  • Store cool, dry, accessible and protected from unauthorised access

Remote alerting

EPIRB, PLB or AIS-MOB

For alerting and locating beyond direct visual range

EPIRBs, PLBs and AIS-MOB devices use different alerting chains. Check registration, programming, activation method, battery and lifejacket compatibility instead of relying on a single range figure.

  • Device and registration must match
  • Crew must know activation and false-alert cancellation

On the person

Lifejacket with light and signal

To keep a person afloat, visible and locatable

Buoyancy, crotch strap, sprayhood, light, harness and a possible beacon must suit the area, clothing and wearer. Equipment only works when worn, serviced and adjusted correctly.

  • Check service status before every trip
  • Integrate only approved beacon combinations

FAQ

Before departure

Does an electronic beacon replace pyrotechnic signals?

Not automatically. Electronic alerting and visual signals serve different parts of the rescue chain. The right combination depends on the area and applicable rules.

Can I buy FKN-controlled signals without proof?

Purchase, storage and handling depend on the category and legal framework. Ask a specialist retailer or competent authority before purchase; Keelwake does not provide legal advice.
